VDA Nature Metro
an opportunity for sustainable tourism
The project named “VdA Nature Métro” (approved by Resolution No. 1162 of the Regional Council on 20 April 2010), co-funded by the European Union, the Italian State and the Region, as part of the Regional Competitiveness Operational Programme 2007-2013, was created around the values of natural biodiversity, and acts by enhancing the sites and promoting sustainable development, transmitting a concept of accessibility to nature, enjoying it while being aware and careful of the natural protected areas and the sites of the region included in the European ecology network Natura 2000.
The project involves various regional institutional and local players (Protected Areas Service of the Agricultural and Natural Resources Department, Regional Museum of Natural Sciences, Department of Tourism, Sport, Trade and Transport, hotels, restaurants, nature tour guides) and aims to define a unitary image of the extensive natural heritage of Valle d’Aosta, in order to promote it as an economic source that is also sustainable and complies with needs of protection.
The project involves promotion activities (specific marketing surveys on the nature segment; building of the Nature Métro System which is the “map” of protected nature sites and the verification, for each of them, of their potential and the best ways of using them; creating a network of sites with the surrounding territory, defining synergies with local operators; producing “tourism packages” and itineraries; defining the “Nature Métro message” and the promotional and targeted communication instruments); information and awareness (organising the educational offer for the Region’s schools with specific educational projects on biodiversity; producing educational material; organising guided tours of the territory, events, informational meetings for raising awareness, aimed both at professionals working in the area and at tourists and/or “enthusiasts”; sports initiatives that are aware and attentive to the interactions and conflicts of the sites), experimental educational activities aimed at different years in the region’s schools to raise awareness and perceptions of the quality of the natural heritage of the protected nature areas in Valle d’Aosta and the Nature Métro System.
One of the fundamental activities of the project is to create the Regional Observatory of biodiversity, organised by the Regional Museum of Natural Sciences which, through an agreement made with the Autonomous Region of Valle d’Aosta, is concerned with creating this consultation instrument open to everyone, able to best express the enormous natural value of the Valle d’Aosta. The Observatory, which also provides scientific support for managing and promoting the “Nature Métro” system, mainly operates through campaigns for monitoring the habitats and the species in order to increase knowledge on the subject and to create an important system of nature databases.
These databases will be an instrument for multiple uses. They act as valuable support for the management of the region’s areas of high natural value since they provide information and indications for safeguarding and knowledgeable use of the sites, helping to identify conservation measures. They are also a useful means for embarking on information and awareness initiatives, and an innovative learning tool available to a wide array of users wanting to find out about this natural heritage and to increase the extent of the databases by contributing their own reports.
Bio-Montagne
RESEAU D’EDUCATION SUR LA BIODIVERSITE DANS LES ZONES DES MONTAGNE
The project, part of the 2007-2013 Programme for cross-border cooperation between Italy and Switzerland, involves the Grand Combin Mountain Community, the Association des Communes du Val d’Hérens and the Regional Museum of Natural Sciences of Valle d’Aosta in actions aimed at protecting and enhancing biodiversity.
The starting point for the project is the understanding of the need to find a proper balance between protecting natural areas while educating the local population and visitors to increase their awareness. It is even more essential in mountain areas to act in this direction, where tourists are increasingly turning to enjoying areas of high environmental value and rich in biodiversity.
The Regional Museum of Natural Sciences of Valle d’Aosta is in charge of the Digital Natureaction, referring to the creation of a Musée virtuelas a centre of virtual knowledge, documentation and consultation on biodiversity, and also a valuable tool in support of the educational activities and use of the territory.
The goal is to create a digital platform for providing the general public with the wealth of information on biodiversity and, at the same time, to best organise the data available on the border area involved.
The “Digital Nature” action is supplemented by these other project activities:
· creating a “Bio-Montagne” centre for raising awareness and educating about the environment (Bionaz, Valle d’Aosta), a physical reference and exchange space for the cross-border activities, including entertainment and tourism promotion
· educational activities on biodiversity, favouring the sustainable and aware usage of the territory by means of: creating itineraries and ways of enjoying the places of high natural value to inform about and promote attentive and knowledgeable ways of visiting, creating additional QR Codes for communicating with/raising awareness of users, organising discovery trips for schools and tourists, educational activities and meeting with operators in the mountains
· backup actions to raise awareness and promote sustainable visits to the natural areas (brochures and other printed material, information service and reception of visitors)
· examples of compatibility between human activities in the mountains, environment and biodiversity (chart of ethics and actions aimed at sports competitions in the mountains).
PIT Espace Mont Blanc
Operational Programme Italy-France ALCOTRA for the 2007-2013 period
Il PIT (Progetto Integrato Transfrontaliero) ESPACE MONT-BLANC è un progetto europeo di cooperazione internazionale, composto da sette sottoprogetti, il cui obbiettivo comune è quello di valorizzare e salvaguardare, tramite la sensibilizzazione della popolazione, il territorio alpino presente intorno al massiccio del Monte Bianco.
La particolarità del territorio legato al Monte Bianco è al centro di tutte le attività del PIT, spaziando dalla sensibilizzazione ambientale allo sviluppo sostenibile applicato all’ambiente montano passando attraverso lo studio di soluzioni innovative per i trasporti e la rivalutazione dell’agricoltura e dei prodotti tipici regionali di montagna. I sette sottoprogetti PIT EMB sono:

Il progetto nel quale è ora coinvolto il museo è denominato P4H5 “Education à l’environnement: connaitre et comprendre les territoires de l’Espace Mont-Blanc”. Il progetto nasce da uno studio preliminare eseguito sulla popolazione dell’Espace Mont-Blanc, il quale ha individuato una generalizzata mancanza di conoscenza del territorio di montagna e delle sue caratteristiche peculiari, nonché degli aspetti naturalistici, oggetto di studio e salvaguardia da parte di vari enti legati al territorio. Gli enti coinvolti nel progetto sono:
- Per la parte italiana: Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali, Fondazione Montagna Sicura, Comune di Courmayeur, Comune di La Thuile, Regione Autonoma Valle d’Aosta.
- Per la parte francese: Centre de la Nature Montagnarde, SIVOM Pays du Mont-Blanc, Commune de Chamonix Mont-Blanc.
- Per la parte svizzera: Canton du Valais, Fondation Tissières.

Cross-border cooperation Interreg IIIA 2000-2006 ALCOTRA France-Italie
Progetto Interreg IIIA 2000-2006 ALCOTRA France-Italie (Alpes) « Les plus beaux paysages géologiques du pays du Mont-Blanc »
Il Museo, in partenariato con il Centre de la Nature Montagnarde de Sallanches, ha sviluppato un progetto di cooperazione transfrontaliera che ha come obiettivo la condivisione e il coordinamento delle risorse e delle conoscenze scientifiche sulla geologia e geomorfologia dell'area del Monte Bianco.
Il progetto ha unito due realtà che hanno in comune: l'attività di divulgazione delle scienze naturali dell'ambiente alpino, la sede all'interno di un castello e la posizione geografica ai piedi del Monte Bianco. Sono stati realizzati prodotti innovativi, rivolti al grande pubblico, che offrono la possibilità di comprendere il territorio alpino attraverso strumenti in grado di elevare il livello di interesse e di conoscenza.
I partners progettuali hanno realizzato una serie di iniziative rivolte alle amministrazioni locali, agli specialisti e al grande pubblico:
- organizzazione di incontri tematici specifici
- organizzazione di corsi di aggiornamento
- pubblicazione sui paesaggi geologici della Valle d'Aosta e dell'Haute-Savoie.
- redazione di animazioni relative alla formazione delle Alpi e all'evoluzione di una vallata alpina.
Alla fine del 2007 i risultati del progetto sono stati esposti nell'ambito di un Convegno nel corso del quale è stato presentato il sito web, utilizzabile in futuro come portale delle scienze naturali del comprensorio del Monte Bianco.
Tale collaborazione ha visto la realizzazione e la diffusione di una pubblicazione scientifica contenente uno studio geologico e geomorfologico dell'area in questione, nonché un approfondimento sui percorsi transfrontalieri disponibili per accedere ai principali 'paesaggi geologici' presenti sul territorio della Valle d'Aosta e dell'Alta Savoia.
La pubblicazione è stata accompagnata da un'attività di diffusione e studio dei risultati scientifici raggiunti attraverso l'organizzazione di incontri tra esperti internazionali e momenti di restituzione al pubblico in generale; e un'attività di formazione indirizzata agli accompagnatori della natura delle due regioni, nonché un aggiornamento degli allestimenti a disposizione dei due musei per mezzo di animazioni, prodotti multimediali e filmati tematici di approfondimento.
